Personal Branding – Engage Your Senses
Think of your brand in terms of what the customer gains when it is viewed by each of his or her five senses – hearing, seeing, tasting, smelling and touching. In a nutshell your brand is the result of everything your prospect’s senses can pick up on or about your brand.
It’s the image you present at all times. From the company’s logo and color scheme all the way to the manner in which your employees dress. Think of what your colors portray. Are they giving the message you want to give?
It’s what your prospects hear from and about you. From what they hear about you in the media to how your customer service team handles incoming complaints. Are former customers likely to speak kindly about you? Are you and your employees pleasant when you speak?
It’s the feeling your prospect gets in all their dealings with you. From their satisfied or unsatisfied interaction with you to the relationship building activities you carry out. Do customers and prospective customers feel they can trust you? Do they feel your honesty?
It’s the pleasant or unpleasant scents that get associated with you covering everywhere from the scent of your product or facility, to even your employees. Do customers get a scent of cleanliness?
It’s also the tastes that get associated with you. From the taste of your product (if it’s a product meant to be tasted) to the quality of coffee or tea you serve.
Your brand encompasses everything about you.

Transferable skills
They are former teachers, nurses and doctors. They are accountants, lawyers and business people. They are spouses, parents, siblings and children. They are former Peace Corps volunteers and military officers. Some are from the USA; others are from Pakistan, Swaziland and Nepal. Different backgrounds, united to provide USAID humanitarian relief to countries all over the continent of Africa and beyond.
The other day we looked at the various skills that they bring to USAID. And what a list it was! They have competencies in strategic planning, leadership, business acumen and team management. Many of them have strengths in communication, decision making and program management. I can’t speak for all USAID employees, but the ones I have met, also have a strong sense of honesty and integrity. Transferable skills? You better believe it!
Today’s message from South Africa…know your skills, your accomplishments and your successes. Learn how they are applicable to international development. Talk to folks that you know (or know someone) that have worked in this field. And if you have interest in making a difference, seek out opportunities with USAID and/or other organizations that are similar. From my perspective, you can’t go wrong!
Setting priorities and values…Tips from Vera
As I mentioned earlier, I am meeting an amazing group of individuals while working here in South Africa. They are committed to their profession and to their homeland. One of these is a woman named Vera. Let me share a little about her.
She is a mother (of 3 children, ages 8, 6 and 2), a good wife and loving daughter. She is also has a Masters degree in international law, a full time democratic and governance advisor, on the local school board and a self-claimed “shopaholic”. Everyday she and her husband come home for lunch to be with their children, and in-between, she exercises. She has a wonderful smile and an engaging smile. By the way, she lives in Zimbabwe, which doesn’t exactly promote her kind of lifestyle.
I asked her what keeps her going. How does she live in a country where she feels like she is constantly being watched and listened to? And how does she lead such a well balanced life?
Her response was simple. “This is who I am Marshall; I maintain my priorities, values and identity by being ME. If I run away from my country, what message does that send to my children?”
So what is 1 of the many things I have learned from my new friend Vera? Stay true to your passions, follow your heart, know what is really important and you can achieve whatever you want.
If you haven’t met a Vera in your life yet, I hope you have the privilege to do so someday.
